The Monsanto Hearings are organized in collaboration with the people who are interested in having one on site in their own area. By conducting discovery and calling for testimonies on the local level, the process becomes sensitized to the particularity of locale and region, reflecting the histories and damages perpetrated on a scale that might not be perceptible in a national campaign. Bringing people together for a regional hearing gives opportunities for people to share expertise and experiences across the field of locale, revealing connections and the fabric of place. Commodity farmers meet consumers and anti-GMO activists and listen to each other’s testimonies. Sometimes patterns are discovered between places. Sometimes legal imaginaries emerge that have the potential to be used in other places and struggles. As of September 2014, hearings have been held in Carbondale, IL; Iowa City, IA; St. Louis, MO; and Yellow Springs, OH.
